Book Review: Strange Angels
After reading this book, I felt… conflicted. I don’t know, it almost felt like I had to struggle with finishing it sometimes. I wanted to really just love this book, but at the end, it was just okay…
First off, Dru; The main character, she needs to stand out above the rest. This is her story, her life, her situation. And while I did find her bad-ass attitude refreshing, I also found it annoying at the same time. She was a bit to cold and to cruel for a main character. Yes, she’s made to be this way, and she definitely has her reasons, but at times, it was a bit much. Her thought process and what she says and does are to different things. It was very hard to relate to and hard to keep up.
I also found that the author tented to repeat a lot of things. And it almost felt like she wanted us to really feel the gravity of the situation but- didn’t provide enough sympathy for us to care about- the gravity of the situation…
I felt no real emotional connection between what she lost, and what she’s fighting for.
Maybe it was because we didn’t really get to see any interaction with her father before he was turned. Nor did we see the Mom or Gran either, and old memories just didn’t seem enough to make me feel remorse.
Other times the books was overly described and I tended to loss interest fast. A book needs to be described yes, but how many times do we need to hear that -The truck wasn’t in the driveway, or the color of there eyes, or If the neighbors heard the gunshots?
The boys, Graves and Christophe, are actually what held the book up. They are wonderful characters that give life to the main character.
They are both unique, fascinating, easy to relate to and love!
Did the book get better? Yes, but at the very end…
On a plus side, As the first book of a series, “Strange Angels” was a good start. The world is definitely intriguing! Gruesome worthy of any monster edging, paranormal universe. The plot is thick enough that I’m going to want to read the sequel- “Betrayals”, out of curiosity if nothing else.
I guess I was just expecting something more for a first book in a series.
