Dattebayo.com Down!

The famous fansubbing group Dattebayo has finally grown tired of all their leechers. I’m amazed they didn’t do something like this earlier. I totally support Dattebayo in this. Streaming site ruins the reputation of decent fansubbers, doesn’t matter if the anime is licensed or not. Streaming sites crops video and sound, making the quality utterly lacking. This again sometimes points back to the fansubber.

DB Halting Fansubbing Production Indefinitely, Effective Immediately 2007/12/27

Dear leechers,

We have warned everyone repeatedly on the issue of streaming our subs.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s efforts to spread the Naruto/Bleach love, but were growing increasingly frustrated, not to mention worried, over our repeatedly ignored requests not to upload our material to Veoh, Youtube and other streaming sites.

Perhaps you guys aren’t aware, but the flagrant disregard for our requests puts us in an increasingly vulnerable position as a fansubbing group. We don’t want to be shut down (which is something we are in constant threat of) and if our rules are not honored, we may well be.

Therefore we once again make this request:

Please do NOT upload any of our released episodes to streaming sites.
Since it’s hard to get people to comply just by writing in these news, we need to get your attention. So effective immediately, we are forced to stop releasing our subtitled episodes for ALL our current projects until the request is met, full stop. This includes Naruto, Bleach, Pitagora Switch and Pokemon.

We regret that we have to take such a drastic stance, but our requests have gone ignored for years. There’s not much more we can do to protect ourselves and to continue bringing these episodes to fans, but we believe that taking these precautions now will keep us operational for the long run. And we hope to keep bringing these episodes to English-speaking fans for a long time. Please help us by abiding by our rules.

Here’s the issue: Dattebayo translates and subtitles anime, and released the episodes for public download on our website. Lots of well-meaning fans then take these Dattebayo episodes, re-encode / cut them into parts and upload them onto streaming sites like Youtube or Veoh. THIS IS BAD. The reason is not because Dattebayo is stupid or annoying or mean.

It’s disrespectful to the subbers’ wishes, but more importantly,
Fansubbing is not legal, and with the popularity of Naruto/Bleach growing, legitimate companies have licensed them for DVD releases outside of Japan.
That makes fansubbers a target – although Dattbayo makes no money, legally the companies have all the right to shut us down. Because Dattebayo is a prominent fansubbing group, it’s at constant risk and legal threat. When you put videos on Veoh/Youtube, that exposes the group and makes it a big target.

To this end, Dattebayo has politely and repeatedly asked uploaders on many streaming sites to STOP UPLOADING our files. Many people assume that the uploaders have Dattebayo’s permission, but that’s not true. The uploaders have basically ignored all polite requests to stop. With recent changes to Youtube “copyright enforcement” policy, it’s nearly impossible to get Dattebayo material removed once it’s been uploaded, therefore leaving our work in horrible quality for everyone to view.

Which is why Dattebayo has decided that we will put a hold on all our subtitled episode releases until the uploaders comply. We’ve been way too nice so far by letting this issue slide, but this is the end. Here’s our (repeated) request to everyone who butchers our work by uploading it to streaming sites. STOP. If you’re an uploader, please DO NOT UPLOAD DATTEBAYO SUBS to any more streaming sites. If you’re guilty of doing this in the past, and your streaming site account is still valid, GO AND DELETE ALL THE DATTEBAYO VIDEOS WHICH BELONG TO YOUR ACCOUNT. We NEVER gave ANYONE permission to upload our work to ANY STREAMING SITE.

It might be annoying to have to figure out how to watch anime without Youtube or Veoh, but trust me, it’s really not that hard. And some fans complain, “I don’t know how to do it! It’s too hard! I need Veoh!” Well, if we fansubbers can figure out how to download Naruto, translate it, time it, edit it, encode it, release it – surely you can learn how to watch it. Or you can always (and should) buy the DVDs when they’re released officially.

Dattebayo is providing a SERVICE – a free, fast, reliable service. Fansubbers would like to keep providing the service, so we hope everyone can understand why this decision has been made. Dattebayo’s wish is NOT to shut down anime-sharing – it’s to keep it alive for the long run. Please help by considering the bigger picture.

Without streaming sites, anime-watching may become less convenient, that is unfortunately true. But it’s better than shutting down fansubbing entirely – because then you’ll have no anime at all.

First off, dattebayo is being a big fucking cry baby good job. You are a crybaby too. Dattebayo is providing none but an illegal service so yes gg, you are pwn. Second, they even say it on their FAQ that they are providing a illegal service and it’s just that the FEDs doesn’t really care about them. GG, pwn again second time. How do you let others steal your shit and put it on the internet ? You tell me is that how you defend your own ? GG, PWN for the third freaking time.

First off, learn to read the post properly. It’s not the legal content that is in question. E.G. “Streaming site ruins the reputation of decent fansubbers, doesn’t matter if the anime is licensed or not”.
It’s about streaming site stripping down the quality of stuff. Take trailers for instance, they are legally posted on streaming sites, but when the quality is stripped, the satisfaction and thrill you get from the trailer is also reduced!
The second you need to learn is to do some research before opening your huge American stereotype mouth. Dattebayo is also offering Professional Service as typesetting, encoding, subbing etc for your own personal or business stuff.
3rd, where do your ignorant self come up with all these FED’s idea and stealing stuff from. You should clearly go watch the interview video from Otakon where there is a panel from the Anime industry along with fansubbers. Get your facts straight at least.
And for the last, go back to school and get a proper education, playing games 24/7 and learning how to type L33T speak is so stereotype kids these days.

I certainly understand why they’re certainly so aggressive about uploaders however I do believe that they’re merely rousing concerns for the fansubbing group. The video and sound quality is not reason enough to place all persons who upload or those who subsequently watch those videos to damnation. I think that statement to be frank is a very weak reason to say that all uploaders are hated. People choose to watch media on streaming sites for a variety of reasons and some don’t necessarily include “they want to leech.” I really do hate it when so many like yourself want to paint everyone who watches episodes on streaming sites with one stereotype, with one reason. It completely negates the fact that there are those who simply find that streaming sites are more compatible with their computer and many other reasons. (I’m not even going to bother to list who these people might be as I’m sure you don’t care as it’s easier to “incriminate” uploaders/leechers/views as this one parasitic group) To say that Dattebayo is solely concerned for their popularity on the basis of not wanting to get shut down is I believe a half truth. If their fansubbing side of their business was too popular than ultimately their professional services would suffer. They’d suffer due to the possibility of being targeted and shut down. This in turn would mean that not only their reputation would suffer but it’d be far more difficult to advertise their professional services since clients would remember them as “the site that had their fansubbing group/site shut down.” That is a lot of revenue they’d lose. And I’m sure my post will either be deleted or ignored or that I will be accused of being of said parasitic group despite my not only downloading torrent files but seeding those same files more than likely far longer than most.

Please then explain to me why then are they so hostile by the very people that helped build their empire with bull like this: “In English, this means you cannot get your Naruto/Bleach fix, you fuckwits!” It’s so unnecessary. There are countless fansubbing work that have less hostility and rudeness and if they are shutdown I’d honestly not care. Another one bites the dust and in turn there will be new fansubbing groups that crop up. (Or perhaps you can claim that I am merely some vulture who is waiting for Dattebayo to be on their last leg as to steal their success.. though completely untrue). I also concede that the fans (not all) of Naruto and Bleach are often times filled with behavior that is immature, trollish, and can be overwhelming and not desired much as their attitude is not desired.

I want to clarify (you can insult my poor grammar) about a sentence in my above comment. ” There are countless fansubbing work that have less hostility and rudeness and if they are shutdown I’d honestly not care.” That is to say that if Dattebayo is shut down I’d not care as there are other fansubbing groups I would much rather patronize because of their lack of hostility and rudeness.
