Complicated day

I dropped my indispensable little paring knife yesterday. It made a nice twang as it hit the tiles and when I picked it up it was missing a large chunk off its end. As I normally pad around my apartment barefoot and not wanting the point to absent mindedly insert itself into my foot I spent a few minutes looking for the point that had vanished. I found it five minutes later – the bent up forces in the steel had propelled it from the floor, over the bar and a few meters into my living room. I’m just glad it didn’t propel itself into my eye or something.

I’m a bit upset though as I used that knife for everything from buttering my toast to hacking a salmon apart. This has forced me to use my 30cm Chefs knife, reminding me how marvelously sharp and dangerous it is – causing me to recall a near miss when I was cutting a loaf of bread with it (only ever cut bread with a serrated knife; if you’re female ask a man to do it otherwise the loaf will end up with an improbable angle to it), in that instance the knife decided my finger was softer than the crust and cut a neat slice into my finger severing me from one of my nerves. I bought a bread knife a year later.
